Pay-per-view TV (also known as PPV TV) is a service that allows a DISH™ subscriber to order and purchase a specific event to be seen in real time in the comfort of their own homes.
The program is transmitted to ordering subscribers with viewing at a pre-determined time as nearly all PPV events and programming are seen 'live'.
The programs that can be seen with pay-per-view television include entertainment events such as musicals, concerts; sporting events including sports such as wrestling, boxing and martial arts; and adult movies. Hollywood box office movies used to be part of the pay-per-view movies service but that has now passed to the Video-on-Demand services.
Video-on-demand, (VoD) on the other hand, is a system that delivers to a set top box a program such as a sporting event or more usually a movie that allows a subscriber to either watch the program in real time, or to download it to a DVR that can be rented from DISH™. Downloading to a DVR allows the user to take advantage of the unique functionality of the DVR unit - pausing, fast-forwarding, and re-winding for later viewing.
The subscriber can view a movie as many times as he wants within the first 24 hours after the first viewing. After that access is not permitted due to the licence agreement with the movie distributors.
The video on demand services provided by the major satellite TV providers are causing major competitive problems for the traditional video rental suppliers. These stores cannot match the service that the VoD providers can. They cannot carry the huge number of titles nor can they provide the convenience of ordering from home and getting immediate service.
The selection of video-on-demand movies provides a comprehensive range from new releases of all genres to the old family favorites and the classics. Many providers carry the whole range of programs from some of the all-time popular series.
Ordering can be done in one of three ways:
1) Using a remote control through a phone line and making a selection from a chosen list.
2) Ordering through the satellite TV provider's web-site.
3) By phoning the TV provider and ordering through a company consultant.
One of America's most popular satellite TV providers, DISH, provides video-on -demand service using the 1080p format in high definition TVs (HDTV). This format gives the most spectacular viewing experience possible.
Watch movies with unbelievable clarity, unbeatable detail and precision, and absolute first-class resolution. This format will very quickly become the industry standard in the years ahead.
Pay-per-view and video-on-demand TV services are available to all DISH subscribers.
